A Ten-Year War on Glyphosate: BioChecked’s Battle for Clean Food
In 2015, the fight against glyphosate became personal. Already entrenched in the Non-GMO battle, I got off the phone with one of our major laboratories, and the news hit hard: even organic crops were testing positive for glyphosate. This confirmed my suspicions—groundwater contamination and wind drift were silently spreading this herbicide, tainting fields far beyond those directly sprayed. The war on genetically modified crops was fierce, but the real enemy wasn’t just the seeds—it was what was being sprayed on them. Glyphosate was the silent invader, and we had to act.
At BioChecked™, we saw an opportunity to turn the tide. The labs had identified the problem, so we set out to create a solution: a rigorous standard and a marketing strategy to empower our producers.
We introduced the Non Glyphosate Certified™ seal, designed to work alongside our existing Non-GMO seal. This was more than a label—it was a platform to grow, adapt, and fight back against the chemical assault on our food supply. Our producers embraced the challenge, sacrificing time, resources, and finances to ensure full transparency in their supply chains. They weren’t just growing food; they were defending it.
The early seals, now archived, were simple but bold, marking the start of our mission. By 2017-2018, BioChecked™ rebranded all our programs, uniting them under a cohesive look and feel. The new Non Glyphosate Certified™ seal, launched during this period, became a recognizable symbol of trust—clean, consistent, and uncompromising. It signaled to consumers that the product was free of glyphosate residues, verified through annual and random spot tests by ISO 17025-accredited labs with a zero-tolerance threshold of less than 0.01 ppm. The process was confidential, with producers seeing results first.
Back in the sixties and seventies, as a young farmer, I worked soil that was black as coal, teeming with life.
Today, too much of America’s soil is gray, lifeless, stripped of the organisms needed for sustainable crops. Glyphosate, a cornerstone of corporate farming, has played a role in this devastation. But the tide is turning. Today, a legion of scientists, PhDs, laboratories, writers, bloggers, and concerned citizens has joined the fight. Together, we’re educating consumers and producers alike, pushing for a return to clean food and sustainable practices.
